Leaving Australia? Don’t Forget Your Super!

If you’re leaving Australia having worked here on a temporary visa (excluding Subclasses 405 and 410), you’re entitled to claim the superannuation that you earned during your time in the country.

The easiest way to make your Departing Australian Superannuation Payment (DASP) claim is to prepare well in advance and before you leave the country.

To make your claim, you’ll need to:

  • Ensure your employer has paid all your contributions,
  • Have your documents certified before you leave, details for which are available from your superannuation fund, and
  • Submit your DASP application – this can be done online.

If you’ve paid superannuation to multiple funds and you’re unsure of them all, don’t worry, once you’ve submitted your DASP, the system will conduct a search and automatically present an application for each super account found. You’ll then be asked to provide additional information before you can make your claim.

Be sure to submit your DASP claim within six months of leaving Australia – failing to do so will mean your visa will have ceased to be in effect and your super fund will have transferred your super money to the ATO as unclaimed super money. While you can still get the money back, the process will be more complex.

It is possible to authorise another person to claim DASP on your behalf (eg a tax agent). This requires written authority from you and will mean they have access to, and are able to update, your personal information.

Once you’ve submitted your DASP claim, as long as the claim is complete and accurate, it will take around 28 days to be processed. You’ll then receive your payment via electronic funds transfer (EFT) to an Australian bank account, via cheque or via an international money transfer (IMT). If the ATO is holding your funds, payment can only be made via EFT to an Australian bank account or cheque.
