Boost your energy with a caffeine nap

Feeling jaded? Grab yourself a coffee then settle down for a nap.

With the end of the year just around the corner, it’s likely that you’re feeling more tired than usual – especially if you’re trying to tie up loose ends associated with your contracts, or pitching for new business in 2021.

While most people will reach for a coffee and keep going, or perhaps lean back in their chair and close their eyes for 10 minutes, research shows it’s more effective to combine the two. And, counter to logic, to have the caffeine hit before the power nap.

Scientists believe this is because caffeine blocks a chemical in the brain called adenosine that causes drowsiness; however, it takes 20 minutes to do so. Therefore, by having a coffee before you nap, you get the double whammy of a quick snooze and instant alertness when you wake up as the caffeine kicks in.

Here’s how to have a caffeine nap:

  • Quickly consume 100 to 200mg of caffeine in a regular coffee or espresso, a strong tea or an energy drink.
  • Take a 10 to 20-minute‘ power nap’ to relieve some of that desire to sleep and give the caffeine time to work through your gastrointestinal tract and bloodstream.
  • Don’t sleep for longer than 20 minutes – if you do, you’ll enter into a deeper stage of sleep which will be harder to wake from.
  • Wake feeling refreshed and ready to continue the day.

Research has shown that people who take a caffeine nap are sharper and less prone to errors than those who simply nap or take caffeine. Even if you don’t fall into a deep sleep, you will benefit. So… why not give it a shot.
