Free English Classes for Migrants

Settling into Australia for the long term is far easier and a whole lot more fun if you speak English – but if you’re coming from a non-English speaking country, learning the language can be difficult.

The Australian government offers a learning program that enables migrants – and even people who have lived in Australia for many years – to learn the English language for free.

Known as the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP), migrants with all permanent visas as well as some temporary visas, and their dependents are eligible to take advantage of this program and to keep attending classes until they have acquired vocational English language skills.

The program, which is due to start on 19 April is delivered face-to-face at around 300 locations across Australia, in major cities and rural and regional areas, as well as online and by distance learning. You can choose to study part-time or fulltime, on weekends and evenings, and volunteer tutors are available to support your learning. Free childcare is available for under school-aged children when you participate in face-to-face AMEP classes.

A new AMEP Online website, providing online English lessons, is scheduled to go live on 19 April 2021. You don’t have to be enrolled in the AMEP to learn through the site and you can study for free whenever it suits you.

To find out more and check your eligibility, visit the AMEP website: www.homeaffairs.gov.au/amep.
