Take Advantage of Incentives to Train Your Young Team Members

If you’re considering growing your business from the ground up, now’s the time to get in there and start training your youngest employees thanks to generous Government training incentives.

For example, if you engage an Australian apprentice between 5 October 2020 and 31 March 2022, you’ll be entitled to the Boosting Apprenticeship Commencements program. Within this program, you’ll receive a massive 50% wage subsidy for any apprentices or trainees you sign up for by 31 March 2022, paid over 12 months. The subsidy will be capped at $7,000 per quarter per apprentice or trainee, and importantly, there is no cap on the number of eligible trainees/apprentices you can engage.

The program applies regardless of the size or location of your business, as long as you register by signing up a new apprentice or trainee or apprentices to undertake a Certificate II or higher qualification under a Training Contract that is formally approved by the relevant State Training Authority.

Important to note though, is that it’s not applicable if you’re already claiming other subsidies such as the Supporting Apprentices and Trainees (SAT) subsidy or JobKeeper within the same claim period.

If you’re thinking about encouraging women into non-traditional trades, now is the time. The Government has created a “pathway service” for 5,000 women to commence in non-traditional apprenticeships.

You can find out more about the Boosting Apprenticeship Commencements Program and the Gateway Services for women here.

And there’s more… Soon a National Digital Australian Apprenticeships Portal will be established to help you manage your apprentice workforce and for apprentices to understand their entitlements.

Also interesting to know is that the Government has expanded the JobTrainer Fund, which is available to support job seekers, school leavers and young people by providing access to free or low-fee training places in areas of skills shortages (such as digital skills and aged care).

Launched in 2020, the JobTrainer Fund received an additional $500 million in the budget, to be matched by state and territory governments. With this funding, 163,000 extra places will be available through until 31 December 2022.
