“We like to give people the freedom to work where they want, safe in the knowledge that they have the drive and expertise to perform excellently, whether they [are] at their desk or in their kitchen. Yours truly has never worked out of an office, and never will.”
– Richard Branson, Founder and CEO of Virgin

As a result of the many technological advancements that have occurred over the past decade, it is no longer completely necessary for all employees to be based in a central office. Due to the innovations in telecommunications, it is now entirely possible for team members to easily and cheaply work together across cities, countries and continents.

More and more people are choosing to abandon the rigidity of office life for the comfort and convenience of working remotely from home. In fact, 2016 data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics revealed the number of employed people who work from home had dramatically grown from 20 percent of the entire workforce to 30 percent in just 15 years. Employers acknowledge that this shows no signs of slowing down, with one in four business leaders anticipating that more than 75 percent of their workforce will not be working in traditional offices by 2020.

Remote working has great benefits for both the employee and employer. While the employee enjoys the greater freedom that comes with flexible working hours and a commute-free life, the employer can take advantage of reduced overheads, smaller staff turnover and increased productivity.
